Society for the Education of American Sailors - We're All About Sailing

The State of New Jersey requires everyone operating a motorized vessel (this includes sailboats capable of operating under power) to have a Boating Safety Certificate (NJ State Marine Police regulations). All levels of skippers and any person taking the helm of a SEAS motor powered vessel is required to possess a state of NJ Boating Safety Certificate as required by law. All crew who take the helm should have their BSC card with them. This is the skippers responsibility. If a fine is levied for a violation, the chapter will not reimburse for it.

To find an approved boating safety course provider in our area you should check local newspapers, area night schools, and community colleges. You can also find information online at,, or Please remember that an individual wishing to obtain a New Jersey boat safety certificate must successfully complete a boating safety course that has been approved by the Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police for the issuance of New Jersey boating safety certificates. All approved online boating safety courses must also include a proctored, in-person, final exam.
